Although WE had a great ride, co-leader Dirk suffered an injury to his toe at home this week, taking him out of action on today's ride and in general this week.  Get better Dirk!

The trail system, just opened in April (joint venture between Clay County, NC and Forest Service), features a nice sized parking lot, restrooms, picnic benches and a nice little pond (more on that).

We rode 13 miles before returning to the parking lot for lunch.   The trail was a little wet in the lower sections, but at higher elevation, it was fast open riding with nice berms and the occasional TFF (Technical Trail feature), mostly small log crossings and some natural rock fields.   The "SABA Beach", about 2/3 into the ride, was overwhelmed with high water, though a few of us waded in the water.

After a lunch, several folks headed back out for the technical orange loop, ending up with close to 18 miles total.   Here's Tom's description of that loop:  "We did the loop clockwise. This route was a sharp climp to the top, where we enjoyed the best view in the park. After the climb we stopped to take some pictures and take a breather. Down the other side of the trail was a long fast decent where we encountered minor rock gardens. It was a beautiful pay off for the brutal climb. Highly recommended?"

After riding, we jumped into the pond near the parking lot (why can't all trailheads have this feature!)    A few of us proceeded to Smoke Rings BBQ in Hiawassee.   Now, which detergent takes out both mud and BBQ stains?
