As the temperature climbed from the nights low of 35, the group assembled at the Lee Road Park and Ride. After introductions and a head count, the carpools were made and directions handed out. The group next met at the Pinhoti trail head just outside of Cheaha State Park. This trail head was the location where 2 cars were left, and the shuttle commenced to the Adam's Gap trail head.

After a brief stop at the welcome center, for a map of the trail section, the adventure began at 11:15 pm Central time. This section of the Pinhoti quickly becomes difficult reaching maximum difficulty at the "boulder field". The blazes are quite well marked on the Pinhoti, however in the middle of the boulder field the trail was lost. This was due to the heavy layer of leafs on the ground. The group turned at this point focusing on a more direct route to the top.

Nearing the top of the mountain, rock faces slowed the progress of the hike. The group was forced to utilize switchbacks to continue progress up this beautifully rugged terrain. Nearing the top a bearing was taken thus determining the trail should be found once again with a little more altitude gain. As expected the trail was found shortly after the bearing was taken.

After a short rest at the top of the mountain, where the group enjoyed the views and some quick snacks, the hike resumed. The terrain eased up a slight amount as the camp sites began to appear. The group focused on getting to the very large campsite at the intersection of the Odem access trail. The arrival time for the camp site was around 4:30 pm and had accounted for about 7 to 8 miles of the hike. Unfortunately no water source was available for this time of year, but all hikers packed enough to sustain the trip.

The timing of the arrival at camp was perfect allowing a leisurely set up of camp, collecting fire wood and even cooking before the sun went down. A large fire was built and provided a nice warmth as the temperatures dropped to the mid 30's. Around the fire stories were told, wild animals were discussed, and talks of movies went on till around 11 pm. One by one everyone bedded down and the day came to a wonderful end.

The next morning camp was quickly packed away. Motivating the hikers was the thought of the nice lunch buffet at Cheaha. The hike started and maintained moderate pace for the rest of the morning. A few breaks were enjoyed at some amazing overlooks, so the group could take in the views and shoot photos. This section of the trail stayed moderate to hard till about the last mile.

With the arrival of the hikers to the Cheaha trail head came a sense of accomplishment, sore bodies, and the knowledge of soon to be full bellies. Everyone had a great time on this trip, and all talked of next time!
