Defying a dire forecast (40% T-storms, weather.com; 50% T-storms, noaa), we set out, and soon the skies changed to deep blue, dotted with fluffy cumulus clouds. One of the through hikers we met was planning to set his alarm for 4:00 am so that he could watch the meteor shower. So yes, a shower of sorts.
An enjoyable assortment of through hikers. One said, after being presented with an orange, that while he had heard about trail magic, he hadn't expected so much of it. Earlier when he had set off to walk to Helen and later Franklin, because he was not prepared to pay the $25 and 30 taxi fares, within minutes he had been offered rides--and again back to the trail.
We saw only a few red trilliums. But the forget-me-nots were at their peak.
