What a great trip! We started out at the crack of dawn to make sure that we were able to get permits to hike down into the gorge. The rangers gave us a quick orientation meeting to cover safety and which trails to use, and then we were off. After descending a massive set of stairs into the gorge, we picked our way downriver to Bridal Veil Falls, also known as Sliding Rock. The weather has been ridiculously hot this summer, and this day was no exception, so it was very refreshing to spend the day in the water. Sliding Rock is a giant natural water slide, and we spent the day sliding down or just relaxing in the water at the top of the falls. After everyone was tired, we started the grueling climb back out of the gorge. The path out is a quarter mile trail that steeply increases in elevation over 500 feet (about a 45 degree angle). After a few breaks to "enjoy the view" (rest and catch our breath) we made it to the top of the gorge and made our way back to the interpretive center. The forecast was for scattered thunderstorms, but the weather was gorgeous and didn't even begin to sprinkle until we reached our cars. Thanks to everyone who came out for this trip - it was the first trip that I have led in awhile and you guys made it great!
