Join me for a beautiful hike in the North Georgia Mountains. We'll start from the Dockery Lake Recreation Area and follow the Dockery Lake Trail to Miller Gap on the Appalachian Trail. There are several easy stream crossings on the Dockery Lake Trail. For a mile or more you can hear the soothing sounds of the running stream.

Once reaching Miller Gap, we'll take a left on the AT and hike approximately 1.7 miles to Preaching Rock. This is a famous overlook near Woody Gap. We'lll have lunch at the overlook, then re-trace our steps. Total distance is about 11 miles.

Notwithstanding the fact that we will not maintain a fitness pace, this is not a beginner's event. Participants should have experience with D4 and/or D5 level hikes. In addition to distance, we will have several tough climbs.

Required Items to Bring:

Lunch and/or snacks
Good hiking shoes
Clothing appropriate for the weather
Plenty of fluid for adequate hydration

Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.

Poles for those who prefer them. Dry clothes and a towel because it is not uncommon to have a shower or two at this time of the year.

How to Get There:
Event Directions:

Highway 400 north to the end. Left on Hwy 19 to Dahlonega. Follow Hwy 60 North from Dahlonega approximately 13 miles to Forest Service Road 654 on the right (also called Dockery Lake Road). Turn right and follow the dirt road about 1 mile to the campground parking lot.

Carpool Cost: Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $44.00 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Cancellation/Partial Attendance:   Please review the AOC cancellation policy.

At the time of this posting, the weather report is good. I will cancel on a case by case basis for terrible weather. In summer, we don't mind hiking in the rain, as long as lightning is not a problem.
